New Harvard Study: Soft Drinks Seriously Damage the Heart - Is High Fructose Corn Syrup the Killer? |
Glycoscience Lesson #34 by JC Spencer New findings show that risk of strokes and heart attacks may be caused by soft drinks containing HFCS and other sweeteners. Review author Vasanti Malik, a nutrition research scientist at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston reports that these sweet beverages can seriously damage the heart. HFCS is often ADDED to sweeten foods or drinks even more than what is already there. The report concludes that consuming one or two servings a day of these drinks is linked to a 35% greater risk of heart attack or fatal heart disease, a 16% increased risk of stroke and as much as a 26% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The report was published Sept. 28, 2015 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. High fructose corn syrup causes heart health issues in more insidious ways than regular table sugar. HFCS can cause the liver to release triglycerides and LDL (the BAD cholesterol) into the bloodstream. This can lead to fatty liver disease and too much uric acid in the blood, resulting in inflammation problems. Research shows that inflammation is the cause for all deaths except trauma. American Beverage VP, William Dermody Jr., stressed that the report unfairly knocks sodas and sweet drinks. Dermody said. "There is no difference between sugar inherent to a product and sugar added to a product as far as the body is concerned." This statement is akin to the pseudoscientific approach, "When high-fructose corn syrup and sugar are absorbed into our bloodstream, the two are indistinguishable by the body... sugar is sugar"* The statements are completely untrue yet continue to be espoused by academia who do not yet understand Glycoscience and how various carbohydrates metabolize differently into the human bloodstream. Some researchers are concerned that the beverages may have a stronger impact on the body since these liquid sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream very quickly. It appears that the added HFCS or sweeteners that compound health problems. The USDA has proposed a new Nutrition Facts label that will identify the amount of sugar added to a product. Until the new label is available, pay close attention to the list of ingredients, especially HFCS. Glycoscience will usher in The New Frontier of Medicine. The technology of sugars range from the most harmful disease-causing sugars on the one hand, to life-saving functional sugars on the other hand. Consuming specific sugars can either shorten or lengthen life. Simple sugar carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates are utilized by the cells for totally different functions. Glycoscience is the pathway for tomorrows doctors and healthcare professionals that will allow their client/patients to experience the self-evident health improvements and provide hope where there was none before.
